My partner received the same letter from Baycorp requesting a call and promptly produced his DOB details. The receptionist told him he was not the person they were looking for and would take his name off the list. If only I had got to read the mail sooner. Unfortunately, my partner is of an earlier generation and still trusts one and all.

This is a scam coming out of The Philippines. It appears to be an identity theft racket. I've had Philipino women calling me 3 to 4 times a week asking for my personal information. I hurl abuse at them but they keep calling. They've called me so often I've begun to recognise different caller's voices. One of them rang the other day & said she was arranging sessions for a Vodafone representative to come to my house to fill me in with Vodafone's latest offers & could she please have my address? My reply, "Not working for Baycorp today"? Caller hung up. If you receive any mail stating it's from Baycorp or get a call from a blocked number that has a Philippino on the other end saying they're from Baycorp, bin the lot.

Got the letter from Baycorp today. Called the Centre. Gave them the reference number. They asked for my DOB. Told them that I wasn't happy to give my DOB, but I was behind on a few debts and was keen to know who I owed money to and how best to pay. (not true). Lovely Filipino girls stated that because of sensitive info she needed to confirm who I was. I replied "is that because you don't want me to scam you, like your company is trying to scam the rest of Australia?" Strangely, the call ended there….

Hi guys, I used to work for Baycorp in the Sydney office. The letters you have been receiving are called "blind mailers". They are sent out as a form of skip tracing for customer's or "debtors" who they do not have current details for. Baycorp is a debt collection business and they are definitely genuine and ARE listed with ASIC. The reason why the letters are so vague is because the address is not a confirmed address and it would be a breach of privacy if the details of the account were disclosed on the letter. BUT in saying that, there was a scam going around involving someone saying they were from Baycorp so if you are ever in doubt, go to the official Baycorp website and call the number on there so you know it is the legit number. I would suggest you def follow up ifu receive a blind mailer (addressed to you) as IF is a debt for you, it's best to get to the bottom of it rather than later on when you go and apply for finance and get knocked back for an old debt you had no idea about. ALSO, there are many scenarios where people have been victims of fraud and someone has gone out and used their name to open an account, not paid it and causing the victim to have a default listed on their credit file. I have had so many scenarios where some poor old person has called in saying they have been knocked back for a home loan because of a default on their credit file and after helping them dispute it, we work out it was either fraud or loaded in error. IF YOU ARE EVER IN DOUBT, ask for the licence number of the caller as every collector MUST have a CAPI licence which is a special licence governed by the NSW Police. Also, google the company and call a number listed on a registered website if you are concerned. Hope this helps :)

I have today received this at post code 3029. My first name is wrong. But family is correct. This obviously shows that they have picked the address from the directory because first name is "spelt" as the first alphabet sounds. Return number to call was specified 1300 326 521 (1300326521) . I have had debt collection calls once before. They call , not send letters. This is a scam. Return was GPO BOX 4372, Sydney 2001. PLus no debts outstanding.

Got suspicious and googled Baycorp - similar phone number - 1300 558 330 - number on my letter was 130 558 829. Then came across this page and all my suspicions have been confirmed. Thanks

Envelope received by neighbours. Same as those reported by everyone else on this site. If not delivered return to: GPO Box 4372, Sydney NSW 2001. Stamped as Postage Paid Australia Priority, with no postmark. Addressed as "Private and Confidential" to a person who has not lived next door in the 6.5 years I have lived in the street. Simply says "Please phone us on 1300 558 829 between 8:30am to 9:00pm Monday to Fiday regarding an urgent matter." Signed off as "Yours sincerely, Baycorp Collections Department", with a reference number on the bottom.

I received that same letter today in the mail asking me to phone 1300558829 regarding an urgent matter from Baycorp Collections Department. The letter had the wrong first name but correct surname and address so I became suspicious about it. I immediately went online to see if anybody else had received a letter like this and came across the webpage thankfully. This letter will be going straight in the bin. What a waste of paper, ink and time though. My goodness - it's amazing the lengths these scammers will go to.

A computer generated letter with no letter head and the 1300558829 number with "Please phone us on 1300 558 829 between 8:30am to 9:00 Monday to Friday regarding an urgent matter. The letter as follow; Please phone us on 1300 558 829 between 8:30am to 9:00pm Monday to Friday regarding an urgent matter. Yours sincerely, Baycorp Collections Department 2000863000xxxx-PDL Silly me, I wasted my time by calling them before reading this web page. After confirming the reference number, my name and address, they went on to request to validate my Date Of Birth and said if I am not the person they are looking for they will remove me from the list. I rejected the request for DOB and hang up the phone.

I received this letter and they said that they had sent a letter to every person in Australia with the same or very similar name. They said that a DOB would identify if it was me or someone else they were after. I told them they were idiots as, if it was real, as if the real person would call. they owe money and they arent going to chase it up. I wouldnt give my details and told them that if I received another letter from them that I would put them up on harrassment charges. He hung up and didnt want to talk after that.

AFter receiving a letter a month ago, and refusing to give my DOB when I did call them, it seems they are now back to phone calls. The caller asked for me, I said it was me, she wanted DOB, I refused as I said she knew my number and I had confirmed I was the person she asked for, I said why is she calling and she actually said it was against Australian privacy laws to tell me unless I told her my DOB and address. Following on from some previous letters, I also contacted the real Baycorp - they have never responded.

If the letter wasn't enough, got a call this morning asking for the person (clearly from an overseas call centre) who they had previously addressed the letter received 16 days ago (incorrect middle initial), strangely it is my husband's name and I said 'yes' when asked if I was that person! When I asked who was calling they replied 'BayCorp' (note: not BayCorp organisation or whatever their official name is), I immediately said that I was on the 'don't call register' although this is irrelevant in this case (but I am getting very tired of receiving calls from overseas call centres), I added that I know this is a hoax and not to call again! I have reported this on the scamwatch! Surely if we have a debt then we would receive official notification.

Two family members have received letters today addressed to me in my maiden name which is several decades out of date. Haven't seen them as I live hours away. Concerned that they have linked me/maiden name with family members that never lived at these addresses when I went by that name. Maybe they sent them to all people with my surname. Too scary tho think otherwise.

As an adjunct to my previous post - I have been calling the (supposed) real Baycorp Aust on the 1300558830 number daily and getting the recorded message blah, blah. The last time I tried, I decided to press 5 which was the option to pay a debt. This time there was a click, click for an obvious forwarding of a phone call, then a longish delay and finally a real person on an echoed distant connection, which is quite obvious to me as being an out of Australia or a voip connection to wherever else or both. When trying to explain to the male call centre operator that Baycorp Aust should look into this problem I explained, he was only interested in the reference number on the received document that I had, even after triple explaining to him that the phone number I had to call was different to the one I had called him on. The reference number would have no validity if he was the real Baycorp Aust. His concern in the fraudulent scam matter was nonchalant to say the least. There was no response from him about it being a problem that they were aware of or even an explanation to why only a recorded message on options when calling, apart from debt collection. His last comment after asking me for the reference number was, "I can't help you unless you give me that number". It seems that the real one, isn't either.

Thank you everyone for your comments, just received the same letter in the post correct first and surnames but incorrect initial... got very worried as I don't have any debts and thought we were in for a bit of legal shock. Did a google search and found the Baycorp website which was even more confusing as we really don't owe money to anyone but the banks, luckily I googled scams for Baycorp and found your comments. Last year I was rung up by the tax department saying that they owed me money and quoted a strange exact sum of about $7000, if only it were true! Logged it on the Federal Government scam site.

I also received a sealed letter today.(Please phone us on 1300 558 829 between 8:30am to 9:00pm Monday to Friday regarding an urgent matter. Yours sincerely Baycorp Collections Department. I called the number above, and a very diligent receptionist answered promptly, assumed her position as a representative of Baycorp and insisted that the business was the real Baycorp after I said, that I believed the letter I had was part of a scam and that I would report it. She then said she could pass me on to a team leader if I didn't believe her. I insisted that it wouldn't matter as the business was still a scam. She then told me to go to the police and report it if I fet that way. (Laugh-Out-Loud, as if the police would care ! - I'm pretty sure it's an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission complaint.) She then requested the Baycorp Collections Department reference number quoted on my document as a way of her proving that the document was legitimate. I then told her, "no way, as I had no debts" and then hung up abruptly. My phone number's ID is blocked, so she wouldn't know who I am. The return mail on the envelope 'if not delivered', is GPO Box 4372, Sydney, NSW, 2001. Coincidentally, another holder of that same box number is also GRIDX POWER PTY LTD. Check out this Emissions Report - http://www.gridx.com.au/140302r.pdf. gridx.com as far as I can ascertain appear to be connected with another web page business; http://www.faithinmarketing.com/ I then decided to ring the real Baycorp phone number 1300558830 and was greeted with the usual after hours recorded message, even for the collections part of the business, when following the prompts. Yes, definitely DON'T quote any numbers or personal details to these Fakers.

Seems like the letters from Baycorp are back in vogue - mine had the correct name and address. I did call unfortunately but refused to give my DOB as I said if they sent me a letter and I responded they did not need it. They ended up giving up, saying it seemed they had the wrong person. As my name is not commonly spelt it is obvious they did have the correct name and address but decided I wasn't worth the effort of continuing.
